Cancer stem cells may underlie many types of cancer. Existing therapies often target rapidly dividing cancer cells, but do not successfully eliminate slowly dividing cancer stem cells which can lead to recurrence and metastases.

Researchers at UW Madison are studying how cancer stem cells contribute to different cancers including brain and breast cancer; and furthermore, how these stem cells may represent new targets for curative therapies.
