Research Description

Dr. Brickson's research interest is stem-cell transplantation to treat acute skeletal muscle injury. Stem-cell transplantation has been investigated as a treatment for muscular dystrophy and cardiac infarction. Recently, muscle-derived stem cells (MDSC) were used to treat acute skeletal muscle injury. The synergistic effect of MDSCs and exercise has shown promise in minimizing fibrosis following contusion injury. Exercise is a cornerstone of rehabilitation in the treatment of muscle strain injuries and is therefore an inviting mechanical stimulus to enhance stem-cell regeneration potential. The limitation to existing investigations has been lack of a method to create a standardized injury in vivo, which is a prerequisite for gauging the effectiveness of treatment interventions. The majority of animal studies evaluating stretch injury have used repetitive cyclic contractions or employed invasive non-physiological models. Dr. Brickson's lab has recently designed an isokinetic device to create a reproducibly single stretch injury to the calf muscle in a mouse. Using this model, they have recently purposed a study to determine the effect of mouse mesenchymal stem cells on immune-cell regulated healing of skeletal muscle following stretch injury with and without treadmill exercise as a mechanical influence on MSCs.
